Becoming Human

Becoming Human

The night I became human
I fell to my knees
Raised my eyes to the heavens
and cried “You’ve Forsaken Me!”
My fists pounded my chest
to lessen the shame,
to cease all the agony
My weak heart contained.
This body that betrayed me,
crumbled to the earth
to rest with all my brothers
also striken with this curse.
From dirt we came forward
and dust we’ll always be,
Humbled faulty humans
brought down to our knees.

The night I became human
I understood what it means
to be flesh and blood forsaken
and to live upon my knees.
